The second thing every builder starts to think about is how they are going to paint their airplane.  Never mind that there are about a million steps and a year or two before that decision really NEEDS to be made.  

Many builders even fly without paint for a year or two after building their plane because they don't want to take it out of service for several weeks to be painted!   Either that, or they're out of money by then.

I looked at a LOT of airplanes, and had several basic schemes that I liked before I finally settled on one that I thought I could live with.  I tried to come up with my own design, but that just wasn't going to happen.

I finally saw another RV9A that I liked and decided that I'd modify the colors a bit and use that design.
