RV of the week, August 12-18, 2002

A joint building effort by co-owners Paul Baird, Ben Knox, and Donald Noble II resulted in RV-9A N109RV taking to the skies on July 2, 2002.  It was a quick build kit and work finished after 8 months and an estimated 1500 hours.

This was the group’s first airplane kit, and they decided on the 9A because of its short field capability and they didn’t need the aerobatic capability of the 7A.

Powered by a Lycoming O-320 D1A, and Harzell constant speed prop, Paul reports “great performance” as it can take off in 200 ft and land in 300 ft.  Climb performance is around 1500 ft/min on a hot day and cruise speed (without wheel pants and gear leg fairings) is 166mph at 77% power.  The stall is gentle with no wing drop at 42 mph with one pilot and 15 gal of fuel.  Empty weight is 1071 lbs.

The panel is equipped with VFR instruments, including a King com and transponder, Grand Rapids Technologies engine monitor, Anywhere moving map GPS, and EXP bus with a custom switching panel below the glare shield.  Flaps and trim are controlled with dual switches on the stick and panel and there is a second throttle to the left of the pilot.

The plane is still in the flight test phase at Wooster, Wayne County airport in Wooster, Ohio, and will be housed later at a private grass strip.
