Back to Building Progress

The Fuselage Quickbuild kit arrived on August 12th.  It was actually ready to be shipped from Van's a month ago (6 mos. after I ordered it), but I wasn't finished with the wings yet.  I decided it would be easier to go pick it up at the terminal instead of unloading it from the truck at my house.  I arranged to borrow a pickup (from the guy who got me started in all of this... maybe he feels guilty) and rented a 16' trailer.  The box is 16' long and 4' wide and 4' tall.  It weighs over 800 lbs.  Before the shipping company will let you have your box, you have to give them $1000.  Ouch!

When I arrived at the terminal, the box was still waiting in a trailer.

When a box this big needs to be moved, everyone who can drive a forklift comes running.  I just held my breath as they scooted it across the floor to the ramp and then brought it down like this, with one forklift on each end.

They thought the easiest way to get it on the trailer would be to lift it up from the sides, and then I'd back the trailer about a quarter of the way under one end.  Then another forklift came around and supported the back end and slowly pushed it all the way on to the trailer.  They were right, it worked pretty well.

3 forklifts gently put the fuselage box on the trailer.
I asked, but they wouldn't follow me home.

After a short drive home, with me driving the truck and my friend following me in my car, the only thing I could think of was how bad it would be if the box fell off the trailer while we were going down the highway.  I'd have a damaged airplane, and a totaled car all in one accident.  Uh, hello, insurance agent?  My new airplane just hit my car.

At home, we tore off the top and sides of the box, and just lifted the pieces off the trailer one by one.  There really isn't much in there.  I'm going to have to order the finishing kit soon!

Some pieces were wrapped in (too much) paper.
