Back to Building Progress

I ordered my engine (O-320) from AeroSport Power during Oshkosh.. (07/27/02)

It was ready to be built and shipped in December, but I had them wait a month because my finish kit wasn't going to be shipped until January and the engine mount is included in the finish kit.

The engine arrived today.  1/28/03

Yet another big box off the back of a truck.

Looks good so far.

Very nice!

Side view... yep, I sprung for the chrome package.

Only one mag.  I chose the Lightspeed electronic ignition package.

After receiving the firewall forward kit from Vans, I did some initial preparations before I could mount the engine.  This included mounting the battery box, master and starter relays, the gascolator doubler, and finally riveting in the firewall recess.

4 months after receiving the engine, it is time to mount it to the airplane!

With a few friends and an engine hoist it is in place 20 minutes later. (A record)

I promptly started the long process of connecting hoses, starting here with the fuel and oil pressure lines.

Then I installed the fuel line from the Gascolator (fuel filter) to the engine fuel pump.

This photo shows the fuel line from the mechanical fuel pump to the carburetor, as well as the engine oil breather tube along the firewall.  The exhaust system is also installed, along with the brackets that hold it in place.

Here I'm planning for the throttle, mixture, and carb heat firewall pass through locations.  There isn't much room for error because the available space is limited.

Because I was so limited on space here, I used the plastic grommets shown in Van's plans instead of the fancy aluminum eyeball things.  After the cables are inserted through the grommets, I'll cover them generously with RTV.

The small grommet is for the carb heat cable.

Since I need to fit the cowl before I can work on the air filter box, I fitted and riveted all of the hinges around the perimeter of the cowl.
